2005 S60R Noise - Help Diagnose
Hello all,
My s60r recently started making a noise from what sounds like the transmission. With the clutch disengaged, the noise goes away. However, with the clutch engaged (in gear or neutral) there is a whirring/knocking noise that matches the engine RPM.
The car has 88K miles on it if that helps. I have uploaded a couple videos of the noise so if anyone has any ideas I would be glad to hear them.

Yeah, labor is terribly expensive. My last service, a major, was almost $900 with coupons. They also tried to bill me for a $108 oil filter that was NOT changed. Had I not asked about it I'm sure they would have charged me, but I have left the topic.
Depending on what the problem is it can be from ~$1500 - 4500.

Turns out I apparently needed a new transmission for a couple of reasons:
1) Transmission came off the car...Input shaft felt grainy and aux drive shaft did not spin freely (something internal was clearly wrong)
2) Volvo does not supply transmission parts (really?)
So my local shop found a used transmission for ~$1600 vs $3600 for a new (rebuilt) one from the dealer, and I opted to fit the used transmission.
The new (used) one feels great, less noisy, and feels like more power is transmitted to the wheels.
Has anyone come across this problem before? found parts?
Also, if you find a used S60R with this noise, pass on it or bargain their ***** off. My local shop only charged $600 for labor (removing transmission, checking clutch, bearings, finding used transmission, etc.) minus parts which is a pretty good deal I think. But they could have charged a lot more. $5000+.

Sorry to hear that. The only reason for a transmission of that mileage to be ruined is A: It was abused or B: it is made from poor parts. My guess is B! I have owned autos with manual transmissions and never had a problem as what you described, and I generally keep vehicles well past 250,000 miles. If Volvo was a reputable company they would have replaced the transmission at reduced cost. I seriously doubt my next auto will be a Volvo.

less noisy what does that mean. I think you may have got taken on the trany. The angel gear sleeve is a know issue on the R but Trany. I don't think i have read about 1. Post over at Swedespeed Forums - R Forum (2004-2007) This is a R only forum and there are some guy with some Real knowledge on these cars top to bottom .Post the Vid there and see what they think. i have a hard time that a non moving non shifting car has a trany that makes that noise.
