Default 2012 Volvo S60 "Gear not in Park" & Immobilizer message - CAR WON'T START

Hoping for a little help with a frustrating issue we are having with our 2012 Volvo S60. Right now it is saying "Gear Not in Park," but it seems to alternate between that and an immobilizer message. I can't remember exactly what that one says, but in essence, the car isn't starting because it thinks someone is trying to steal it. I've seen lots of threads with this issue using the 5 lock/unlock and other methods, but here's the problem: we had a mouse in the garage at one point and we did have to replace some wiring to the steering column. The car was fine after that, though, and a couple days later came up with this new issue. I am assuming that the same darn mouse got in there and chewed something that is making these messages come up.

I will listen to any advice given as we are an hour away from the dealer and are supposed to drive 5 1/2 hours for a doctor appointment for our daughter on Tuesday. My intuition tells me that something is either chewed or loose, and am hoping someone can pinpoint the places to check that might cause this message.

Oh, and yes, lights come on and all, just no start.

search for posts related to PNP switch (sensor) issues. The park-neutral position sensor ties into the immobilizer to not allow the starter to engage when the shifter is in the wrong position. They can and do fail from time to time, but you may be able to resolve the issue in the near term by doing a "shifter row". turn the key to allow the shifter to move then go from Park to Lo to Park about 20x fast. That may scuff up the contacts enough for the sensor to properly detect the shifter's location and allow the car to start.
