Default 2015 S60 T6 Noise from gas tank

Hey everyone,

I've been having an intermittent sort of roaring noise that seems to be coming from the gas tank. It only happens when the tank is maybe above 1/2 to full and happens more often the fuller it is. It does not happen once it gets down to lower than 1/4 tank or so. Another weird thing is that the gas pump will shut off after 5 gallons or so as if the tank is full and will keep doing it more often as it fills. I've tried to get a recording of the noise, but there doesn't seem to be any trigger and it doesn't seem loud enough for my phone to pick it up. Anyone have any ideas? It's driving me insane!

Thanks!

These noises tend to be caused by the fuel vapor systems. The more complicated that they become, the more air sounds that people hear in the car.

What is happening is that your vapor system is not purging the air out of your tank correctly. This sends a false reading to the gas pump and the pump thinks your tank is full. Need to replace the system and the valve. You could just remove it but you will throw some codes until you replace it. Hope this helps.

Thank you both for your responses! I took it to the Volvo dealership here and they spent a good amount of time (enough to give me a loaner car and call me the next day) cleaning out the tank and checked/cleaned out the hoses for any clogging or anything similar. Well, still getting the same noise and having issues filling. The issue with the dealership is they are hellbent on actually hearing it. I know I'm not knowledgable about cars or the mechanics in any way, but it seems to me that at least given these symptoms it could be narrowed down? Especially considering the gas tank can be eliminated now. Unfortunately my car doesn't want to do it whenever they're in the car, so I guess my other option would be to place a mic somewhere that will pick it up.

Would anyone have any other ideas? I greatly appreciate the help!

Default Same problem

Hi atbass, I purchased a used 2015 Volvo S60 T5.5 Premier with 44,000 miles last year and exactly what you describe is happening to me too:

"an intermittent sort of roaring noise that seems to be coming from the gas tank. It only happens when the tank is maybe above 1/2 to full and happens more often the fuller it is. It does not happen once it gets down to lower than 1/4 tank or so. Sorry to hear the Volvo dealer couldn't help. Did you ever find a solution? Thanks!

Hey there. Yes, I did find a solution. It was a clogged EVAP canister. I believe it was this one specifically - https://www.volvowholesaleparts.com/...ister-31338102

Great news! Thanks for the lead. Last question, did you have the dealership replace this part or someone else? Glad to hear you solved it, this was the only post I could find with someone having this issue!

I had the dealership replace it since they had done all the work previously, and they have a lifetime warranty on the parts. No one at the dealership had ever seen that issue before, so it took them a couple hours of looking through everything to find out what it was. I believe there are two different EVAP canisters that could be the culprit, but myself and another person who had the same issue both had that part I linked previously replaced. I haven't heard the noise since they replaced it. Hopefully this helps - I know it's annoying!

Don't know if you can fix this without replacing anything, I had to buy a new vapor canister, then had a local mechanic do the install. Here is a link to the part I purchased: https://www.volvowholesaleparts.com/...ister-31338102
Car has not made any noises since.

Default Gas

So pretty much every time when I go to a gas station to fill up my tank after 5 seconds the pump stops and then it continues then stop and then it continues again it has problems filling up on high pressure on low pressure it has no problems of filling up the gas tank
So you're saying change the canister

Did you change the vapor canister to stop the thumping noise from the gas tank and the problem with gas hose shutting off prematurely?
