I know there are many posts here regarding the ABS Pulll Over ASAP error, and there appear to be many possible, potential causes. I can't afford to take this to a certified Volvo mechanic, nor is there one any where near within 1.5 hours anyways. I'm tired of this happening about once a month though, and have to figure something out.

I'm seeing re-manufactured ABS Modules online for $80. Would it be foolish to purchase one and install myself? I'm not a mechanic but have fared well so far on many weekend warrior mechanic jobs, I just replaced my own timing belt on this car recently, etc...

What do you think, is it worth the risk? Out of all the possible causes, would this be the first to eliminate?

Actually, it just happened again, and it says "Brake Failure, Pull Over ASAP"

 

what year is your s60? Have you had a shop scan for any OBD2 codes (not all scanners will read the full set of Volvo codes)... The other possible causes are the ABS pump itself, or one of the sensors feeding into the controller - but given the intermittent nature of your problem - and the fact that the ABS module failures are usually due to cracked solder joints to the components, it seems a reasonable risk to assume its the root cause. You may want to do some research specific to your model year on the r&r procedure and whether there are any other considerations.

 

Thanks for the response. It's a 2001, and I'm gonna do a scan on it soon. My neighbor owns a junk yard and says he has some tool that scans specifically ABS models and such, but I've never heard of that before. Sounds too good to be true, lol. So I'm gonna give that a shot in the next couple days.

 

There are several sets of OBD2 codes - most budget scanners only check powertrain "P" codes which cover fuel delivery and ignition issues etc (ie check engine faults). There are also body codes (say for the airbags or AC system) and chassis codes (ie ABS systems) which are stored in different modules. To top that off, within the code sets there are generic and proprietary (manufacturer) codes... So if you scan and see something like a P0300 (general misfire code), its a power train ("check engine") code. If you see a C1xxx code that's a chassis code which may relate to your ABS. If you see a Uxxxx code, that means there's a fault in the system to system communications. Just keep in mind, the codes give clues not 1:1 root causes.

Ok, so I took it to another local guy who works on imports and was confident over the phone that he could pull some codes. He couldn't, nothing would come up which seemed to have him a little baffled.

That's what I was worried about, there being no codes since I reset it each time by disconnecting the battery. I know some thought it would store these codes, but apparently not in this case. So I found the nearest authorized Volvo dealer and service center, and they are 2 hours away. I hate the thought of driving there just to have the same issue, no codes because it's not in error. I asked them over the phone if they were familiar with the issue and they said they hadn't seen that error, new to them.

This is killing me, I've got to get this car fixed. Aside from that, it runs great. It just happens out of the blue about once a week.
