Default Airconditioning problem

S60 2002,

air conditioner stops working when hot - fan blows but the air is warm, usually happens after about 30-40 min of driving during the day.
I am in california so it is hot outside...

I saw the topic on reshimming the compressor and mentioned it to my mechanic, he got all tense and said that the compressor is fine - it is the voltage that is not high enough to hold the clutch engaged, so the problem should be somewhere else...

To prove his point he connected the positive directly from the battery and it did run without disengaging (the engine was hot and the clutch would desingage otherwise - if pushed with a broomstick it would engage for a few min and disengage.

any ideas?

Have the compressor reshimmed. If he won't do it have someone else do it. It is the compressor needing reshimming.

Thanks!

To take compressor out - would it mean that I would need to disconnect the pipes coing into and consequently refill the freon?

If that is true do I need to drain the system first?

Typically yes. But you might be able to loosen the compressor and move it back and get the clutch apart without removing it.
