Alternator type
Hi,
Just I few hours ago I started getting a "Low Battery Voltage" warning whenever I idled for a few minutes, which would clear after a short drive. I figure it's the alternator or the regulator, but my question is how to distinguish which version I have. I can't see a part number on either part and I know there are three types of alternators (120A, 140A, 160A) and two types of regulators (120A, 140/160A). Is there a way to figure it out without removing the unit?
Thanks!

If you get some voltage output above battery voltage, it's probably the regulator. You may be able to read the last 3 digits on the regulator with a mirror (which is enough). You've still got to remove the whole thing to replace the regulator.
I found the best price at my independent starter/alternator shop ~$60. I also tested the diodes during the repair.
Don't forget to check the cables and battery connections for crud and integrity.

If you've got the alt # complete, the regulator can be cross-referenced to match it.
I think the regulator may be covered with some plastic to hinder the read.
