Default Back to the dealership - ETM

Well as I expected, the temporary fix they did on my ETM has worn off and the car will barely idle. It actually runs just normal, but once you let off the throttle, it wants to die.

Hopefully Volvo won't tell me to replace the transmission (wtf) again and will honor their warranty. I'm happy with the dealership, my adviser is trying his best for me. I'll see what they say tomorrow, wish me luck.

Hey there. The ETM is the Electronic Throttle Module. It is a horribly designed part on these cars of ours. Check out this web page for more information: http://www.vexedvolvo.org/

Did they REPLACE it or just do the software upgrade (yellow sticker or white sticker on it)?

make them REPLACE It. It is under recall.

They did a software upgrade and cleaned the throttle body. And the dealership is trying to make them replace it, but the Volvo rep wanted me to replace my transmission first.

It's not up to the dealership, it's up to the Volvo rep. We'll see. It may be under recall, but they are still going to be picky about it.

And it's a white sticker.

white sticker confirms that they just reflashed it.

They will replace it next, but the transmission should not have anything to do with it. Why would they want you to replace your transmission at big big bucks when an ETM is dirt cheap for them?
This doesnt make any sense at all...

No, I don't. I actually meant to ask when my adviser called but I missed the call.

He said that this latest problem is in fact the ETM again. He's going to submit another claim and go through all the bureaucracy. They better just replace it.

In the past, with the ETM, they were supposed to just do it and submit the paperwork after. That said, most were done 4 or 5 years ago (at least) so the policy probably changed.

Just got the word. They are not going to replace it.

Records show that a new ETM was installed on the car at Volvo of Tulsa in 2007. However, the ETM that is in the car is a white label and not yellow (he mentioned that). I'll have to deal with it more when I'm not at work.

What BS.

I guess now I'll have to send it to XeModeX and see if it can be repaired. If not, I'm screwed. I am not buying a new one.

This is total bull**** - i would throw a total fit.

Dealers have what is called a "good will" budget. Ask straight up if they would be willing to tap into that and then they can fight with VCNA in the background. Its a white sticker - it was never replaced. Period.

Again if you can find out the reps name email me at

mcginlep AT gmail DOT com with his name and your vin and I will reach out to someone I know at VCNA

Ask about the goodwill budget FIRST - if they dont use it, they loose it!!

Well, I'm afraid it's over. I talked to the service manager today and he said Volvo is steadfast against replacing it in my car. He actually went higher up than our rep (forgot to ask the name, sorry). So I'm done.

I hate to lie down and just take it, but I am. I'm going to send it to XeMODeX, have them fix it, and pucker up and pay for that. And then sell the car.

F250 V10, here I come! haha.

Oh well, thanks for the offer for help Bender.

Oh yeah, they wouldn't budge on their price for doing the work if I paid for it.
