Back Door Won't Open
I have a 2001 S60. The latest problem I'm having is with the back door behind the driver -- it won't open from the outside, and since the child safety lock is engaged, it will not open from the inside either. The dealer could not open the door. The only way to find out what the problem is, is to take the inside door panel off, which they cannot do without destroying it, which I will have to pay to replace). The only other suggestion they had was to get a locksmith to open the door. (I'm not sure how a locksmith can open it and they can't).
Has anyone else had such a problem? Any other ideas? I guess I could call a locksmith and ask if they can unlock a back car door.
Note: The lock does pop up when the remote is pressed as if it is really open.
Thanks,
Coffey
Sorry about your luck. You are in a jam!!!.
The only thing I can suggest is to remove the outer black molding at the bottom of the window. And in a semi dark area look in there with a flash light and see if you can see anything. see if the rod came off the handle. Or try to find the child lock switch and try to flip it and see if it will open then.

Thanks for the reply Tech.
I'm wondering if a locksmith would do what you are suggesting, since that was the only suggestion that the Volvo dealer had (a locksmith). It's not a show stopper, but it is a pain for back seat riders and I would like to get the door fixed. I think I'll call a few locksmiths to see if I can get it fixed. I could look at it, but I would have no idea what to look for on the inside of the door.
Thanks again.

I spoke to a locksmith....His first reaction was about like yours, Tech... A bad spot! He told me that he could not see how the door could be opened without taking the inside panel off. So, I guess I'm stuck for now, until I decide to come up with the $500 to replace the panel that will have to ripped out....

Right now, I'll have to hang tough. It's a minor nusiance, and I don't plan to sell this car any time soon (I enjoy having no car payments). I live in the Raleigh, NC area....
Thanks,
Coffey
I know this isn't terribly helpful.........but I did see some door panels on ebay for cheap money. If you were planning on putting the new panel in yourself, that would save money if you happened to ruin the door panel.
I appreciate the help. Maybe I'll check out Ebay.
Tech, thanks again for the offer to help. If I happen to travel down the coast toward Disney, I'll certainly let you know.
Thanks again.
I know this post is ANCIENT, but its the first one that came up when I did a search, and I'm already a member here. I just bought Volvo #4..a 2000 V70XC, and it has the same issue you are describing. Did you ever figure out a way to fix this problem?
2 things to try
stand outside pulling on the handle and have someone inside bumping the door with their shoulder
that or the pillar that your seat belt is atached to (between the door and the back seat) that pops out fairly esally just fold down the seats and reach under it to try to unclip it
perhaps this will give you enough room to get to the lock mechanism?
