Took my 2002 S60 Base this morning to the dealership for a fuel pump recall and ended up getting it replaced. They also checked my engine light which turned on yesterday. It turns out my front oxygen sensor needs to be replaced and they quoted me $475 total to replace it.

Physically i know I can replace it myself and buy the part, but is there anything I need to be concerned about? Is it just a simple swap? I assume I'll have to follow the battery disconnect procedure before doing it right?

I checked FCP euro and they told me it's this one:

Volvo Oxygen Sensor (S60) - Bosch 13626 | FCP Euro

Is that correct? Is there a possibility of getting an equivalent one for under $200 or even under $100?

Volvo gave me part # 91341.

 

I found these two on ebay used for $49 w/ free shipping and 60 days warranty.

Heated oxygen sensor. Volvo # 8670276

Should I? I assume it's the second one with stock code 8670276. That website says it fits my car, but the part numbers are different than what I've seen so far.

 

9497252 is the sensor for your car. 8642230 is the rear sensor for a turbo. 8670276 is the front sensor for a turbo.

Don't cheap out with oxygen sensors. I see people put in cheap universal sensors or some crap brand sensors and come right back with the same code.

The one from FCP is the right one.

No need to disconnect the battery before swapping. Just have the key off.

 

I went to discounto2sensor.com and after putting my car's specs it gave me a list. These two came up on the list for the upstream (and the one from FCP as well):

Bosch W0133-1661360 ($109)
Bosch 17137 ($133)
As well as some more expensive ones (Walker, Denso, etc.)

I can get the 17137 new for $85 on ebay and it's Bosch brand. I honestly don't have $100+ on my budget right now let alone $250+. So it's either those Bosch ones or wait until I can buy the expensive one.

I wouldn't mind waiting, but the car is starting to hesitate more when idling on a red light and under heavy acceleration so I'm in dire need of replacing it. I'm not aware of the risks of driving with a bad O2 sensor and waiting for a replacement.

 

Well the $109 one is a 5 wire and the original is a 4 wire. So that connector probably won't even work.

I always recommend oxygen sensors from Volvo, they are finicky. You can roll the dice with a cheap one though.

I think Denso is actually who makes them for the non turbo early S60s.

I can get the Bosch one from FCP (13626) for exactly $181.34 on AutoZone through my job's commercial account. I'll just wait and do that. They can probably help me out and let me pay them half now and half later.

 

Your work doesn't have an account with the Volvo dealership? They might be able to get a better price on the Volvo sensor (though I doubt it'll be less than $183.

Keep in mind sometimes after replacing one sensor, the other sets a code so you might want to budget for the rear sensor soon too.

 

We're a buy here pay here used car dealership, mostly working with people that have credit problems. We have about 30 cars on our lot and if we sold more than 3 Volvos last year that's a lot. I called Volvo once and we get 15% off list.

Turns out AutoZone has the Bosch 13626 (same as FCP) for $194.99 to regular customers and there's a coupon for 20% off and free shipping that expires the 3rd. It comes out to $166.xx after taxes to get it shipped to my house. So I'll be ordering that by Tuesday the 2nd. Better price than what my workplace gets.

The rear/downstream sensor is a lot more affordable (around $100 or less), I'll keep it in mind. I'll update the thread once I've ordered the sensor and again when I've done the swap, thanks again.

 

Forgot to mention that the check engine light turned off last night after leaving the car parked for a few hours, is this normal or does it indicate anything?

 

If it sees a certain amount of drive cycles without a fault, it will go off. The criteria is different for each code. The code is still stored though.

 

Just ordered the Bosch 13626 for $166.91 total from Autozone. Should arrive this week so I can get it done this weekend or earlier if time allows.

Do I need to worry about resetting the CEL or will it clear by itself after replacing the sensor? (assuming that was the issue.) Can AZ/Advance clear it for me or will disconnecting the battery do it?

 

Clearing it with a scanner is the best way to go.

 

Finally replaced the O2 sensor last night. The CEL was off when I turned on the car to take my lunch break so I'll wait and see if it comes back on. The car idles smoothly now and acceleration is solid.

I went ahead and changed the oil just in case and I'm glad I did. It was dark brownish/grayish and definitely due for a change. The engine feels a lot smoother now too and I don't say that because of the new sensor.

Overall everything turned out well.
