Creaky Noise

Creaky Noise
Hi Guys,
Got an '01 2.0, there is a strange creaky noise from the front left wheel area when pulling away or whenever there is any drive force initially being put to the wheels and again when it is taken away (as in when declutching to change to 2nd), its a tinny metal sort of sound, like an old rusty spring being compressed, it seems to only be a result of horizontal movement as vertical movement caused by uneven roads do not cause the noise, any ideas?
Thanks,
Dave

RE: Creaky Noise
I have an 02 S60, and have noticed this in the last two weeks. Only left turns like into a driveway or parking space. Doesn't happen on the right side.
I would think this noise which in my case is a little whiney high pitched is coming from either the power steering pump, or the CV half axle on the drivers side.
I think I am going to have it checked out. This would be virtually the first real problem potentially with this vehicle.

Stickydub Can you hear it at all when stopping?
Does it only do it for a second?

RE: Creaky Noise
Had similar noise. Had to replace CV joints/axles. Whenever accelerating, from a stop, and especially turning accellerating, say sharply out of an intersection or drive was the worse. My noise was like metal moaning/deep creeking, but wasn't bad to the point of popping yet.

RE: Creaky Noise
tech it was only for about 2 -3 seconds on take off and stopping (whenever drive/stopping force was applied to the wheels) ... however people, just incase this helps anyone else, I got the car up on the jack last night pulled the wheel off, and did two things,
1. cleaned out the base plate that the spring sits on (various bits of dirt, stones and who knows what else lodged in there).
2. tightened the hub bolt (dont know if that is the correct name, but its the bolt that sits in the centre of the wheel). threw it all back together and wham no noise!
so its to do with either of those two things, the dirt under the spring, stones or something - creaky metal - makes sense maybe or I remember reading somewhere about getting replacement (xc90) hub bolts for the s60 because they were somehow better and didnt loosen up, either way its gone and my car no longer sounds like a fiat! [:'(]
Thanks for everyones input though

It is only meant to seat the wheel bearing.
If it is to tight, the bearing will overheat.
