Hi sowemavolvo,
My 2004 did the same thing, but also my gauges went dead. I shut it off and restarted it and everything was fine, but was told the Dim (Drivers Information Module ) had to be sent out for repair. Anywhere from 250.00 to 350.00. I haven't done that yet because everythings been fine. (knock on wood).
Good Luck
Richard

Could be loose connections on DIM microchip/capacitors
Our 2002 S60 instrument panel started to go on the fritz. For a while it would reset by pulling over and restarting the car. At 147,000 miles the panel died. Research (see this forum http://www.volvo-forums.com/t13321-d...d-problems.htm ) said it should be a loose microchip/capacitors in the DIM (Driver Information Module). Online we found detailed photo's/instructions on how to re-solder them - but didn't feel comfortable with that. The dealer said $1000+ for a new Instrument cluster plus 3 hours labor. Instead we went with BAA Remanufacturing Inc. out of Taunton, MA 866 573-2740 http://stores.ebay.com/BBA-Remanufacturing-Inc (or find them overseas at BAA-Reman.com ) They have a lifetime warranty. Because of the excellent rating and almost local we decided to try. The $339 included overnight shipping both ways. It took 10 mins. to remove the Instrument Panel (find/follow instructions - disconnect battery, just a few screws and simple wire harness/plugs). We shipped it out that night with the shipping label they emailed us. They got it the next morning, fixed it and turned it around the same day. Once the Instrument Cluster was re-installed we went to the dealer to get the codes cleared. BAA gives instructions on what to tell them. First the DIM codes then the SRS module codes. (The Volvo job order/receipt lists DIM 0001,0003,0005,0006, E003, SRS 00D4, E003) Volvo charged $47 for labor - 30 mins. Our dealer now actually suggests this for customers with older Volvo's out of warranty. Considering we "just" bought the car for $3000, we were sooooo happy to save over $1000 to fix it. Another thread (under the 200,900, etc series) mentions a place in CA and a garage in VA. Hope this helps !
