ECM and TCM Software Updates
I was recently told by a mechanic that these updates are only available through the dealer because transmission of the updates are now controlled by Volvo via satellite. Pretty nice market to control considering software COGS will consitune to go down with each sale, it only requires labor, and the dealer wants over $200 to install.
Does anyone know:
1. Is the "satellite/dealer required"thing true
2. Is there any way around this
3. Does everyonehate going to the dealer as much as I do?
Thanks!
Steve

RE: ECM and TCM Software Updates
1. I don't know if it is fed via SAT. However I do know that going to the dealership is required. It is a dealership ONLY thing.
2. I wont say no, but I wont say yes either.
3. I absolutely hate going to the dealership. Such a ripoff. Example: They buy the s70 turn signals for $30 a piece and sell them for $50 a piece.

Thanks Rob
Ya, totally agree on markup. The MAP sensor I bought was 161. Dealer wanted 200 for the same part, plus another 200 to install. I had it installed for $75 and it runs great.
Both of my trunk struts broke and the dealer wanted $300 to repair. I bought two replacements online (again, Vovlo equip not after market) for $37 each and installed them myself in 30 minnutes.
Being in the software industry myself, I cant help but wonder what the markup is on a dealer quoted $200 software update. I bet it take all of 15 minutes and they just watch light flash.

No problem.
I had to have my actual ETM replaced. That was before the 10 year 200,000 mile warranty was instituted. Cost was $920 and could have cost up to $1200 to be replaced. I had the software update done as well and I believe it should be covered under the same warranty but if not it was like $50-$150.

We charge 30$ for S/W and 1hour labor. going to the dealer may be a ripoff now, but you either pay now or later. when somthing goes wrong and you take it to your independant and its still screwed you end up at the dealer and out more money since you paid him and the dealer
