Default Electric powersystem service & battery light

I tried going to work this morning and I got the el.powersystem required message, with the battery light on. I cut the car off and tried to turn it back on it would not turn just a clicking noise. Is it that I need a new battery or alternator any help would be appreciated it's a 2002 Volvo s60 nonturbo

You need a new alternator. And maybe a battery, depending on how long your alternator hasn't been charging.
