Default Emissions error message

Hi,
I've got a 2001 S60 non-turbo, and recently I've been greeted with an Emissions error on the dash, with the Check Engine red light accompanying it.

The service schedule says "PCV, inspect, clean nipple and hoses" for the 120,000 mile interval. I'm at 122K, and I don't think anything was done in this regard at 120K.

So I called up Advanced Auto Parts, and he tells me the car doesn't take a PCV valve. There is a filter, he says, but it's not available to him.

Does anyone have an idea what the car is calling for, and how to go about satisfying it? If it's not too involved, I'd like to perform the work myself. I'm fairly skilled generally, but no professional mechanic.

Thanks much,
p.

I'd like to follow up on this, in hopes that someone can give insight. I had Advance Automotive run a computer check on the S60 today, and it came up with a "gross" leak/blockage. It didn't use the word "leak" - I don't recall the term used but it essentially meant a leak.

At the same time this message began manifesting several weeks ago, the exhaust sound from under the hood got a good notch louder in the cabin. It doesn't sound bad from outside the car, but it's very noticeable from inside. So my guess is that there is an exhaust problem of some sort that is causing the emissions message.

Does anyone have a feel for what might be involved here, and the best way to proceed?

Thanks,
p.
