Does the Remote start option ($500) from volvo have any hardware they install or is it purely software? I was wondering because if it is just a software update I would rather bring it to my indie volvo guy, not the dealer.

My volvo app will only be active for a year and I cannot justify spending $200 a year on an app just to start my car. I plan on keeping it longer than 3 years so the ERS update seems like a better choice. I have a 2018 volvo s60.

My 2015 xc70 is a software download (in the CEM) and can only be remote started with the remote (within range). My 2020 xc60 remote start is only on the Volvo app. Not sure which system your 2018 uses

 

My 2018 has the remote style with the buttons on top, so I can get it added. I just forgot to ask the tech about the process at the time. My 2018 can use either system because of this remote and is also equip with a 4g capable modem to still use the app.

 

I found out my dealership goofed and gave me 6 years of the volvo app when I was only supposed to get 1 year. Thanks for saving me $500 remote start option lol
