Folks,

I have discovered gray long fibers exiting my newly acquired S60 T5's exhaust pipe.
Is this some sort of sound deadening material that was part of the exhaust muffler, indicating that I need to replace the muffler?

what year is your car? Any signs of exterior rust? Do you tend to drive short distances where the exhaust doesn't really heat up and dry out?

 

The car is a 2007.
There is no visible rust, as the car has less than 40,000 miles on it.
Most of the driving is on the highway, for long trips over 100 miles.
