Default Exhaust or Motor Mounts

Hi Everyone - The 02 S60 I bought a few weeks ago has 87k miles. Sitting inside the car at idle, you can "hear" a vibration but not feel it. As the car warms up it goes away. The idle is not the smoothest, but it's sometimes the same way in my girlfriends S80 so I think that is just natural.

While driving you can hear the hum of the exhaust too, and it quiets as you let off the gas. It's not that bad really, but I'm a freak for a quiet car.

So do you think motor mounts or exhaust? And if exhaust, do Volvo's have the resonator and muffler thing? And what about cost?

Thanks...

I would check the engine mounts first.

Thanks tech. That's probably a cheaper fix then the exhaust. I'm thinking exhaust though because the pitch of the noise changes with RMP. So if it kicks down a gear to pass someone, then the pitch gets higher.

I don't feel a vibration through my seat though like you normally would with engine mounts. I do have a rough idle at times though.

Check the 2 upper engine mounts.

So I inspected the exhaust this weekend, and couldn't find any leaks. The only loudness I heard was at the rear muffler, but nothing out of the ordinary. BTW, I've never seen a muffler that shape, it was pretty cool.

I only see 1 large upper mount, with that bar connected to it that run across the back of the engine. I can rock that bar, and see a small crack in the rubber bushing in the mount.

I didn't inspect the lower mounts.

Is this a DIY job? I can do the basics like brakes and stuff like that. Are there any special tools involved? And I thought I read on this forum something about poly vs rubber bushings.

Yes. It is one of the easiest DIY jobs. Definately DIY.

No special tools just a few large spanners. You have to undo 3 bolts! The two bolts on the bar, plus the x1 on the mount.

I bought the poly from IPD and it is great. Didn't notice extra vibrations.

Take a look at IPD. There is also useful info on there. eg installation instructions for pdf download.
