98 V70 Service and Motor Mounts
Hi,
I've got a 98 V70 Wagon that the dealer says needs lots of work. We've owned this car since new, it has only 65K original miles on itand alwaysbeen dealer serviced. My son just hit a curb pretty hard so we went in for a service and alignment. They say it needs:
3 new Motor Mounts, 980.00 (They say it might have happened when the curb was hit)
New rim (It holds air just looks beat up) 590.00
Fuel Filter 195.00, (I called an auto parts store and the filter is 16.00, does that sound right)
Coolant service 145.00
Timing belt 600.00
and driver door lock asembly 360.00
I'm in shock, is there a better way to go about this, like a non dealer service? Do these prices sound right?
Any input would be helpful.
Thanks,
Curt

Those prices sound very high. Very high. Find a local independent Volvo repair shop, tell them what you need and they should give you an estimate over the phone. The indy shop I use here in Columbus, OH is good, but I think the are too expensive. Their phone number is 614-486-2661. Call them and ask what they charge for the motor mounts etc.
Fuel filter can be done by youself in about 1/2 an hour.
Never done the motor mounts, but I don't think they are that hard to do.
Find a wheel repair shop to do the rim. Probably run about $130.00.
Coolant service - not sure what they are doing, but you could do a drain and refill yourself for the cost of two gallons of anti-freeze.
Timing Belt typically runs $300-400, but if they are doing both pulleys, tensioner and water pump (which probably does not need to be done) then $600 is not that bad.
Driver's door lock assembly - I have not idea, but I would be pricing the parts if I was you. Get one from Erie Volvo for a used one and save quite a bit I'm sure.

OK...I don't know how hard the car hit the curb but do you feel any symtoms of bad motor mounts? Maybe you can get away with replacing only 1 or 2 not all 3.
Rim..if it's just looks, it probably can wait.
Fuel filter..like mentioned you can try it yourself or just buy the part and bring it to a mechanic. Shouldn't be more than1 hours labor.
Coolant Service..if your car has 65k miles I'd be changing the timing belt anyway..Which I would include the water pump to go along. Which also means that it'll be a good time to flush coolant.
The door lock..I've never changed the driver side door lock, only the passenger's front and rear. You can buy them online for about $100 and if you can do it yourself. Can you at least use your key to get in? If so, then that too can wait.
Just my opinions! But if I were you, I'ddo the timing belt/water pump/coolant and get a second opinion on the motor mounts.
