Default exhaust options

i just noticed that my 2003 s60 2.3 has two mufflers, and i thought that an easy way to free up horse power and get a better sound would be to cut out the first straight muffler and replace it with straight 2" pipe, and maybe in the future when iv got some cash putting in a new muffler such as a borla muffler. any opinions/suggestions?
(and its not my cat, it is in fact a second muffler)

Welcome!

it is the resinator. it is the one that really restricts the flow. Well that is how it was on my 745.

You can do that if you want. How much you will to spend? How loud do you want it?

thanks for the insight. i was wondering why it had two mufflers haha but im i a college student, so im trying to keep it as cheap as i can without rigging something thats gonna end up like crap. i looked up a borla free flowing muffler which was just under $200, which isnt terrible, but more than i can spend at the moment. im hoping in the next few months ill be able to make that kind of investment though. so for now im probably going to stick with the straight pipe. do you know how loud that will make it? i want some more sound, but i definitely do not want that buzzing sound you hear from every 16 year olds civic with the 6 inch muffler. i want a nice sound, but nothing overwhelming.

On my 745. I cut off the rear muffler and liked the sound it made, was louder than stock, but not to loud. I assume, that you can do the same with yours.
now, the only problem with removing the center muffler, is it will tend to drone more in the car, then if you where to cut off the rear muffler and put a pipe there. This wont do much for performance, becuase of the center muffler. not sure how loud it will be on the newer cars. I never done it yet.
borla has nice stuff, but so does magna flow. also dynomax, and other types of free flowing mufflers.

also. I dont know where the hangers are for the S60's. they are most likely on the mufflers, so you will need to weld some new hangers on the pipe. and get it welded to the stock pipes. Welding is the best, but clamps will work.

wait for others to comment.

yeah the way it is right now its buzzing alot in the cabin. basically i started cutting right before the resonator and the blade ended up being not long enough, so my pipe is cut about 1/3 of the way through. and i would prefer to cut out the rear muffler, but the problem is its this weird effed up corner shape which would be hard to replace with pipe. what i may do dpending on where i am financially at the end of the summer is to replace the resonator with a borla muffler and cut out the other muffler.
