Default Gas trap does not lock

I just bought a 2002 S60 and this car had all the recalls done but I realized there is one problem that I could not detect when I bought it: therefueling trap door does not stay shut. Of course the seller was mumm. Well the risk of buying from a private seller than a dealer. No taxes, but you get what you pay for.

I wonder if this is some sort of feature or if it is simply broken.

When I put my finger inside, I can feel no latch

The door has a locking mechanism that engages at 5mph if the door had been unlocked for refueling. Likely this lock is broken. Maybe try a quick fix if you don't care about the locking part. There are a decent amount of threads about this topic here so search up.

Thanks! I read about the automatic locking mechanism but unfortunately it does not work and this is one thing I did not inspect when I was looking at the car. I looked at the engine, the body, the controls but not the details.

It is still a great car but that will bother me until it is fixed.

I will look for other threads. I guess it is not model specific, of course, it has to exist with all the Vs of the same generation.

Thanks for your answer!

It the hinge working normally?
Does it kind of like snap shut or just open and close easy?

The hinge seems to work normally, as it allows opening and closing the door, but unfortunately the door does not lock. It also stays slightly open.

Then the hinge might be bad. If it stays slightly open something is wrong and that might be why it isn't locking.

The locking mechanism engaged with the door slightly open.

I suppose the hinge mechanism avoid this issue, or maybe the trick would be to push on the door then push on the lock button.

Little thing the previous owner probably knew already but I will be kind with her.

No that is for the older cars (S70)
What you will need is teh gas door hinge. In the picture in the link see the metal spring in the hinge?
That plastic part should be what you need. See if the metal spring looks like it is hooked under plastic like in the middle of the spring.

Well, it is fixed. I just played with the spring and it allowed me to push it in all the way. Then all I did was drive and I could hear the little noise from it locking.

So all is fine.

Thanks for the help! New (to me) car, I am a little anxious about it, as always when you buy from private seller.

Not only did my hinge break but the hook that holds the door closed broke off. Check to see if that is broken. You may need an entirely new gas door if that is the case.
