Default Get New KEY

Hi,

I have a large clunky key and want to get a copy that is smaller. Can a local keymaker do this, or do you have to go through volvo? Has anyone made copies.

Also does anyone know how to open the trunk without using the keys, from the inside of the car?

THanks

Any keys you want will have to be made by the dealer. The key itself contains a chip which is read by the immobilizer and must be present to start the car, so I doubt you can have a smaller one made. If you have the integrated key+fob design, you may be able to get a standard key with a separate fob.

That's too bad. It seems like the immobilizer is more hassle then it is worth. My car is insured so am not worried about having it stolen

I think it is too. Cars with these systems are stolen all the time. A colleague of mine has an new Nissan xterra which was stolen and recovered. The police found a working set of keys in the car, even though my colleague still had both sets at home. I guess there are ways to get around just about anything now days.
