Default where to get a backup key?

Does anyone know where i can get one additional backup key? I know i can possibly go to the dealer. Any idea how much is going to be? Another other place i can duplicate one for less than the dealer charges? Thanks!

dealership is the only place to get a key for the new cars. the key and the remote come separate and both have individual software to install with the VIDA cart. there is no way around this one except going to a dealer.

Not the only place.
You can buy the keys and fobs on Ebay easily. but it has to be programmed at the dealer. That is the only stipulation.

But you have to Watch Very close to what you buy.
There is like 10 different keys for the Chipped cars.
Alot of times people sell the Keys and say they will fit all the cars but not true.
Besides all the Models there also is Valet and Master keys.

Also on the Subject of the Remotes. If anyone buys them Make sure they are in the original Package and have the Bar codes on them That is for the S60,01 and up V70 and S80

One way to find out is to try the trunk lock with that key, or try to enable the valet trunk lock feature with the ignition key in the run position - if it won't enable, then you don't have a master key :-)

Not Always.

It goes by the Slot cut in the side of the key.

But I forget which is which. One is cut like a Square and the other is on an Angle.

Dude, I lost my key/remote in Vegas last week. Car was parked at a casino parking structure. I called the dlrshp and they said I'd have to tow the car to them. (100 bucks right there) Bring proof of ownership (How the heck was I suppossed to get that if the registration was in the car?) I had to get my chick to fax them the Sales Contract. Anyway, they quoted me as follows: $ 78 for the key plus $280 for downloading the software to it. 50 for the remote and $300 for the software!!! I dont know if it was because they knew I was in bind and they were trying to ding me or that's what it normally costs. Well after I had ordered the key the next day, I found my damed keys at a souvenir shop where I'd been the day before. I cancelled the order but they said I had to pay for the key (78 bucks) and the key is pretty much useless, i can only open the doors with it but I cant start the car because it's not programmed. Ever since that awful experience I am being extra careful not to loose it again. I dont think there's another way to get a key for cheaper though, so if you only have one key like me.... you may wanna take good care of it, i think..
Peace out!!
E.T.

While we are on the key topic....
Here is a pretty clever cost cutting mod for anyone interested.
There is always a way around the dealer....well not totally but kind of !!!!!!
