I need a new steering rack, which one? Volvo S60 2001
Hello! This is my first post here. To my sadness, my Volvo S60 2001 manual petrol needs a new steering rack.
As you can see here, it’s leaking badly:

Regardless, I need a new rack. But… what part number is it? There are different types, SMI/ZF, speed sensitive / non speed sensitive.
I was really hoping someone on this forum could help me figure out and discuss this job - and what rack would fit this vehichle.
Best regards, TheStuckBolt

You can see a lot of the rack from under the car.
SMI vs ZF is just a brand thing that switched over in 2003 so as a 2001, you most likely have SMI. You might be able to see what brand is stamped on the rubber boot if it is original.
If there is a plug that goes into the rack, its likely speed sensitive.
When all else fails, call the dealer with the VIN and ask them.

That is useless knowledge though, when the Volvo Dealership (amongst others) scans my VIN and give me a part number that leads to a ZF rack (36050357)
…. see now how I’m confused?
I feel lost.

Yes, it is most certainly SMI. And it’s not speed sensitive.

I still have not figured out the part number confusion. But if
you need a new rack for a volvo S60, V70, etc 01-09, you just have to figure out a few thngs
Peppermint on youtube explains it well, google «volvo steering rack peppermint»
I believe you just have to differentiate between the SMI and ZF type racks. And if it’s speed sensitive or not. But I am not 100% certain, so do your own research. And check out peppermint om youtube, he might give you some insight
