Default jerky when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear

My s60 is jerking when I speed up from a stop. It happens around 20-30 mph and seems to happen right as it is shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I have an automatic transmission. Any thoughts on what might be happening?

You may need a software upgrade on the transmisson software.

I had this problem too! After talking with a few people worst case senarios began popping in my head about having to spend lots of money replacing the transmission. I took my car to the Vovlo dealership today to have something else done and while I was there I had them look at the transmission. They suggested a flush and the transmission software upgrade. I passed on the flush but had them upgrade the software and I am soooo happy to report that it seems to have solved the issue. No hard shifting from 1st to 2nd anymore. For $70 I think it's worth at least getting the software upgrade first to see if that takes care of it.

Try the software upgrade and fluid change first, but if your car is an '02 or older then most likely you are in for a transmission valve body replacement.

For my friend's car, it was the tranny solenoid.

Old question, but, no one addressed the fact that it's a 2-3 flare, not a 1-2.

I hardly doubt that first gear waits until 20-30 MPH until it shifts into second.

I think that shift is probably around 10 MPH.

Mine flared 1-2and 2-3. As wellin the cold morning, itwould take about 4 seconds to shiftinto"drive" from "park".
The valve body is were all the solenoids are that determine what gear the transmission is in.(See attached pic for my old v.b. with all the solenoids). You can replace an individual solenoid but this is only a temp and half measure fix. The new valve body is of a different design. When you install the new version v.b,a new wiring harness is included as well as it is different as well. I had both ofvalve bodiesside by side and compared them. The casting is also stamped with a revision B for the new one and A for the old one.
Before replacing the v.b. I flushed about 2 cases (24 liters)of J3309 through the tranny and had the new software flashed. No fix until I replaced the $850.00 valve body. Sorry but believe me this is the only permanent fix.

Does it happen only during cold weather? If so, my 04 manual mentions slows shifts as a way to warm up the catalytic converter:

Cold starts
When driving before the engine has reached its normal operating temperature, the transmission will shift up at a slightly higher engine speeds to heat the three-way catalytic converter as quickly as possible.
