just bought 05 S60
Hi all,
I have looked at everything and almost bought an Audi Quatrro AWD. I put a deposit downthenthought about it for a few days and took it back. Something was not sitting right. They are beautiful cars till something goes wrong and thenvery expensive to fix I am told. The other thing was that it needs premium gas only.
I then looked at Honda CRV's, TheAWD Matrix and everything else that was 4 or AWD. I had a Grand Cherokee for years andwas triedof having to have an SUV for AWD. I wanted a car this time but AWD is needed in my hilly area of Connecticut.
I then decided to look into Volvos since I always hear good to great things about them. The Audi was pretty expensive and payment would have been about 60 more per month than I wanted to spend for the same year of car. I then test drove an 05 S60 with the sport sterring package. The miles were 33,000 and I got the car for $20k. I seemed solid and very comfortable. Any thoughts on this decision is appreciated. By the way, very nice forum.
Thanks,
Peter.

By your interest in AWD I'm assuming your S60 is AWD which would mean it's a turbocharged motor. I wouldn't recommend anything other than 91 octane or above. I read that the volvos detect knocking with lower grade fuels and retard theirtiming to compensate, but when I decited to test this theory, my car ran like total *** for 350 miles worth of fuel. At 20 cents extra a gallon, you're only paying $3.50 extra per tank, or 5% more.
I also was torn between the Audi s4 and the S60. I ulimately picked the volvo for the same reason as you (super expensive repair costs on the Audi) but have since found many more reasons to prefer the Volvo.

Love our '05. Manual shows that 87 octane is acceptable. Contrary to the post above, we have no problems runningit. Not quite as responsive on the throttle, but if you are doing mostly highway miles, what difference does it make?
