Default K&N or Not??

I recently purchased an '02 T5 and am wondering if it is worth it to buy a K&N. I have heard nothing but good things about them, any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Great, thanks for the help. Great site by the way. Many questions I had were answered the first time I browsed the posts.

He has a "T5", so yes he has a turbo.

Come on S60T5, don't be so hard on Bender. In terms of the K & N, I put one in my 02 S60 NON TURBO, and I think it had a positive impact on the performance. I run them in all my vehicles.

I don't think I was being hard on him. I was simply pointing that he has a T5 and a T5 is turbocharged. I meant no offense.

Once again I would caution you about too much oil on the filter. It will kill your MAF! I run Piper Cross filters (pods) on an engine that uses Weber 45 DCOE side drafts. It was back in that era (read: no MAFs or ETMs) that the oiled cotton or foam air cleaner was king. I truly would not use one on a bet on today's modern engines. If you are, then use very little oil on the cotton filter (K & N) and clean your MAF on a frequent basis. I am not sure if your auto has the Marelli ETM but if it does..............well, clean the ETM on an even more frequent basis. I have seen many many tests where it is shown by dyno that a premium dry original type air filter is superior to the oiled cotton affair. Your call and your money, but heed the above cautionary advice.

Reg, thanks for the advice. I have already purchased and installed the K&N. One question for you: How do I clean the MAF? And how frequently would you recommend?

CRC makes a MAF cleaner...........it's aerosol. I would caution you about using carb cleaner and that type of product. At any rate, simply 'unclamp' the MAF and spray the interior. You want to keep the 'hot' wire clean. They are rather costly to replace.......I had one replaced on my Volvo under warranty and the cost surprised me! The oil and cotton gauze of the K & N will muck up the MAF. So, since you have already purchased it, use the oil sparingly and take a few minutes every other month and clean out the MAF. Interestingly there have been many tests done on the cotton filter vs paper and the results would probably surprise you. A clean paper filter "generally" flows more air than an oil soaked cotton filter. As I earlier mentioned, I run Piper Cross filters on a BMW. The Piper Cross is a foam air cleaner which is oiled. Since Weber side drafts use velocity tubes, a pod filter (because of clearance issues) is the only option. A pod filter does NOT effectively 'clean' the air being introduced to the engine such as a paper filter does.
