MAF/ETM advise needed
Hi, I have a 2001 S60, non-turbo. 109k+ on the odometer. I've had my ETM cleaned, most recently about a year ago. Hunting at idle persists, and is sometimes accompanied by a shudder in the steering wheel. On one occasion recently, I had more severe problems at speed, with random deceleration and a rough running engine. Thinking that my ETF was finally about to send me to limp home mode, I visited the dealer.
No codes were found. Dealer confirmed symptions and performed a "potentiometer test" of the throttle, which it passed. They then found that my MAF sensor is "reading out of range". I rejected the suggestion to replace the MAF for $475 (Part is online for under $200). I cleaned the MAF and it has improved slightly.
I'll probably sell this car soon. I want to know whether it is likely that the MAF is really the problem here, and whether replacing it, $200 out of pocket, will "fix" this problem beyond the minor improvement I got by cleaning it. If it makes the car run smooth and idle perfectly, the investment may help me sell. If not, I'll never get it back (which is probably true of the $390 I just paid for lower control arm bushings as well). Any thoughts on whether "reading out of range" means that my MAF is done? Is this "potentiometer test" legit, or a way to avoid paying for an ETF under the extended warranty?
