Question MAF, ETM or Valve Timing?

Hi everyone,
Any help on this would be MUCH appreciated. Given the cost of a replacement ETM and/or MAF I would like to be fairly confident I am buying the right part/parts.

Car:
2001 Volvo S60 Non-Turbo ex-Japan grey import. Supposidly done 35'000Km but could be more. Cambelt looked well worn, hence the suspicion regarding km's.

Situation:
Car purchased by my parents recently, they only drove it a few times before it was taken to my good friend and professional mechanic for the cambelt, waterpump, tensioners and seals to be replaced.

Car test drove well after the above work was done but started giving trouble soon after. Mechanic has checked and re-checked valve timing and while he does not work on Volvo's often he has been thorough and is quite confident of valve timing.

Symptoms:
1. If car is started and allowed to idle from cold the check engine light comes on.
2. Car is showing code P1103 MAF Sensor In Range But Higher Than Expected
3. Engine check light goes out when code is cleared.
4. Car is idling at 750RPM (which I thought slow)
5. Engine check light comes on when accelerating under load sometimes (like passing another car on a hill) and power is reduced when this happens. I have not experienced this myself yet but have not had an extended test drive.
6. Idle can be rough at times (again not experienced this myself yet)
7. Faults seem a bit intermittent as car performed well when I took it for a short test drive.
8. Long term fuel trim is right up at 14% at idle, it drops back a bit when revs are increased.
9. Throttle body appears nice and shiny and clean.

I am happy to perform any further checks as recommended buy you guys/gals to further clarify things. Any help at all would be much appreciated, many thanks in advance.

It does sound like your MAF is failing. I would try giving it a good cleaning before I would buy a new one.

Thanks Andrew, the more I read the more I think this as well. Its reassuring to that you think the same as well, I will be sure to clean and do what I can to test the MAF as soon as I am back at the Garage on Tuesday.

Also, top marks to you guys at FCP Groton. I sourced my timing belt kit and a bunch of other stuff for the car from you. Very pleased with the parts, pricing and the service, I have recommended you to several people of the last few weeks.

Thanks again.

+1 FCP Groton Great Company

I would have Tech take a look at the Vid in this link. Its a walk threw of Timing belt replacement and may give an idea if some thing was missed. http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthr...g-belt-replace.
Also MAF needs to be cleaned use CFC Air Mass Meter (MAF) Cleaner

Or a like cleaner. Most Auto Part stores sell this brand.Be careful of what you use.If you use the wrong cleaning it will kill the sensor in the MAF and will be replacing it with a new one.Its a good place to start. I had my MAF go bad The car ran like it was miss firing and always felt like something was missing while giving it gas.

Thanks for that!

Will do exactly as you recommend. Can't wait to get down to the workshop on Tuesday and see what comes of it all.

I will be sure to update this thread with what is found in the hope that its of help to others.

Thanks again to you both.

Update,
Went down to the workshop today, man it is stinking hot here... hard to concentrate when the temperature is in the mid 30's, and its a sticky humid hot too.

Anyhow, turns out my mechanic friend had already cleaned the MAF with appropriate cleaner. I gave the throttle body a once over as per instructions on here and tried the "tap test" on the MAF which did nothing.

However, when I put the MAF on the scope it was wobbling around a bit and would not go over 2.5V regardless of what I did.

Also, if I held the car at 2000 RPM the engine would periodically surge and the MAF readout on the scanner would jump up about 200%.

So... I have ordered a replacement, sorry FCP I wen't with local this time to save some time.

Will give an update with the results of the new sensor once its arrived and fitted.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Im not sure who you bought the MAF from but remember that they are very specific to your car. I learned this the hard way buy ordering what looked like the right one from Ebay(It was a generic) When i installed it CEL and check engine light unstable idle all went bad just to save myself a few bucks. Gl and i hope all works out.

Hello again everyone,
Just an update, I installed the MAF and all is great. I have done about 200km and had my OBD2 scanner connected and recording for most of that. Looking back at the fuel trim etc it has come back into line very nicely over those km's.

So excellent result! The car also has more power than I expected to get from it and the gear changes are now a lot smoother.

To the above poster, very good point on the MAF, I was very careful to get a genuine one that was exactly right for the car. Sorry to hear you had trouble and thanks for raising the point, it may help others.

Thanks also to those above for your assistance. It was great having others in agreement with my course of action before I parted with the money.

Happy driving everyone!

Congrads on sorting it out. What are you using for a OBD2 to get info. I have been looking around but it seems that Volvo has some issues with giving up info.

Thanks.
I am using one of these
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/elm327-...ner-tool-28528

Along with a copy of "touchscan" software which you can buy as a download.

Great system, easy to use and very powerful. Being able to read/clear fault codes is one thing but being able to record and chart fuel trim etc gives you a really good window into whats going on. Touchscan does all of this with ease.

If your Volvo does not connect immediatly just try reconnecting with the engine running... sometimes takes a couple of tries... no big deal.

Best of luck!
