What's the hp on a 2.4t, I don't know? In any event, the usual would apply. ECU upgrade, dp is mandatory, and an exhaust. Maybe buy an intake box for an R, and do a home made CAI kit. But at this point, you may need some suspension upgrade to handle the extra hp.

You can blow 4k pretty quick, so shop around.

You could do things like;

-FMIC (the intercooler at least in the R isinefficient, I assume it's like that on all S60s)
-intake pipes
-turbo upgrades

I have no personal dealings with this company, but looks like good stuff...maybe they can help,

I agree with everything S60 R says about the FMIC (Front Mount Intercooler), Intake upgrade, Turbo upgrade as well.

However you will want to add to the list...

-Downpipe upgrade
-Catback upgrade
-ECU upgrade

I don't agree with going to VMS (Volvo Motor Sports). They are a shady company and people have had problems with their parts. Look at this thread to help you out with VMS, http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index...howtopic=40594

Here is an example from that thread of what happened to a part someone purchased from VMS.

This is unacceptable IMO and most people will agree.

So to recap what you should do to try and achieve an S60R status...

1. Intercooler upgrade (Like S60 R said an FMIC is a great idea).
2. Intake upgrade, be it a OEM paper filter, K&N panel filter, custom CAI, BMC CDA.
3. Turbo upgrade (18t, 19t, etc...)
4. Downpipe upgrade, 3" mandrel bent
5. Catback system upgrade, 3" mandrel bent. Since you want to upgrade your turbo to something bigger a 3" mandrel bent catback system will benefit you more over a 2.5" mandrel bent system.
6. ECU upgrade, (RICA, IPD USA, BSR PPC)

With these mods you should see pretty nice gains.

$4k might seem like a lot, but it isn't. You will blow through that money in no time flat and you might only get a few parts maybe not even half the parts.

You could litterally spend close to if not over $2k just on a downpipe and catback system. You will spend at least $1k for an ECU upgrade. The turbo is going to run you $500+ and I know your going to want brand new since a used turbo might kill the power gains unless it is a slightly used turbo. The FMIC can be constructed from $200+ and I'd recommend at least using a good FMIC intercooler and not a $45 one. And depending on what intake route you go your looking at 50-$400 something.

How much hp are the stock internals on the 2.5T rated for. Would boosting it from 208 to 300 be okay, or suicide? Also, I'm running a 2004 2.5T AWD automatic transmission, is that AWDtransmissiontough enoughor will 300 hp start breaking things? Finally, will a R turbo bolt upto the 2.5 intake? If not, what is the max pressure that it can produce efficiently? I can build everything from the downpipe back and all the charge pipes, but am concerned with the intake plennum.

Basically, I'm hoping to buy an ECU upgrade, turbo, FMIC, and all new piping, but I don't want to be replacing broken parts orbreaking myengine or transmission, if the rest of the motor isn't builtlikethe R's.

Thanks.

For all the money you'll spend on this stuff, why not sell it and buy an R? If you can find an '07, it'll prob be real cheap.

I think his whole idea is sticking to a budget. Would it be easier to sell his turbo and get an R? Sure. But easy isn't always cheap.

Maybe he likes not having a car payment. Maybe jumping into a different car with an unknown history is a bit scary. I could think of a bunch of reasons why. Maybe he has some extra cash and just wants to have a bit more fun...

Just for ideas, I would have you check out IPD's project cars page:
http://ipdusa.com/projectcars.asp?
Most notably, the 2002S60 AWDbuild-up (mostly cosmetic) and the 2001 V70 T5 build-up (sweet). The V70 of course is the wagon version of the S60.

Can you reach your goal of 300+ hp... absolutely. Can you reach it on a budget of $4000... probably not. I'm sure whatever you do, you'll be happy. I wouldn't mind having 4 grand to blow on my car right now.

actually since I posted that I've been looking into them. I didn't realize how much they've come down in price especially considering how few miles most have. I've seen several 04-06's with less than 50k in the $18-20k range that I'm going to start saving my pennies for. This way I don't have to worry about impropper tuning, or over working the 2.5ts motor/drivetrain. The upgraded suspension I think is also worth it.

And who wouldn't shell out $20k for blue guages?!

There's a bunch of diff factors which lead to my suggestion, and havinga budget was one of them. As you can see from his post, they have come down in price, that added with a remaing warranty (there are extended ones too) might make it more feasible to trade-up. Maybe he has alot of miles now, and it's worth it to consider. Also as he said, you won't have to worry about improper tuning/parts not designed for the performance. Depending how much engine work is done, you may want/need to upgrade the brakes and suspension, adding more costs. Plus the 4C is worth it IMO.

One might decide to sell and buy an R, one might choose to keep and upgrade. It's why they make chocolate and vanilla my friend.

I might add somthing though. I own a couple of Rs myself and insurance is a lot more expensive on the R's. Especially if you opt for the full coverage. Insurance companies know that Volvo calls this an "R" for RACE, and theyll nickel and dime you.
