Default Mysterious squeek

Very squeaky sound coming from the right front area. Any little crack or bump in road. 5 minutes driving and the noise disappearscompletely. Diagnostic from one garage quotes struts and mounts both side for $900. Anybody heard this issue before?

what is your model/year/mileage? Could be mounts, could be sway bar bushings, sway bar endlinks etc. To try and ID the source, I'd probably spray some penetrating oil or WD40 to see if you can wet something down to make it go away. It won't fix the problem for good but can help avoid guess and replace.

I just got back from the garage and confirmed the strut mount needs to be replaced. they recommend changing both sides and the struts also. which brand strut should I get installed? Job is looking like it will cost $1000 or more.
Thanks!

Sachs are OEM and a good replacement brand. Will your shop allow you to supply the parts? If so, check out Tasca Parts (Genuine Volvo), EEuroparts and FCP Euro. the struts (assuming you don't have the the 4C adjustables) go for about $110 each, the spring seat goes for about $40 each and then you will need new bolts and possibly the bump stop/dust boot etc. Some shops will aso automatically replace the strut's support plate (expensive at $125) but that is not typically a point of failure. Check out Tasca's page for part numbers and design.

I'd guess about 3 hours total labor to do both sides so that adds to $350 in parts, 350 labor, $100 for an alignment and you're out the door for $800.

Thanks MT for that. Much appreciated!
The struts are still good, no leaks and it's only one mount that's bad. I'm thinking to replace just the mount now. Does that make sense? If not, I'll probably buy parts from Tasca and find a shop that will put them in.

if its only one bad mount, you can kick the bult of the costs down the road and only fix that one strut. You'd still want to do an alignment.

check out the bad spring seat (aka mount)

the one on the left is good - the metal bush is still attached to the hard rubber. The one on the right... not so much.
