Got my windshield cracked (close to three feet now) by a rock and need a full replacement. Is there anythng magical about the original factory-installed windshield (the decal says Splintex Laminated DOT 24) other than the volvo logos? My insurer says it won't pay extra for cosmetic additions, like logos, but I've got a feeling that the original windshield is far superior to what the local autoglass place would put in. Help.

 

out here in Australia a windscreen fitted is $200. I replace mine every 60,000miles religiously as I hate looking through sand blasted and or chipped screens.
Laminated safety glass is laminated safety glass, just get it done.

Again out here the windscreen guy comes to you, takes about 30 mins and cant jack or drive the car for an hour. done!

 

Some factory installed glass has some things that aftermarket companies dont.

Some glass is HEAT REDUCING and some I believe is water repellant.The Local dealer can run your VIN to check if your vehicle has these items.

 

Just got mine replaced too. I'm not sure if you have the same system as me but mine has a rain sensor built into the windshield which raised the cost by 50 bucks. I got it at cost (no markup) through a warranty for 350.

The glass itself is laminated (multi-layer) glass when its for a windshield. And it must meet certain minimum U.S. DOT standards. Unless you have rain sensor windshield wipers, a windshield is basically a windshield. Just make sure the replacement isn't optically distorted or you'll end up with a headache every time you drive the car. Even if its at the side near the A pillar or down at the bottom. Check it carefully before you give away your money.

And, for many years now, all windshields are glued into place, which explains their propensity to crack -- the edges don't move within the windshield opening unlike the old days when they were held in place basically by a big rubber grommet and "floated" in place.

Your insurance company is right -- its policy doesn't say "replacement with genuine Volvo parts only".
