Default Windshield wiper doesnt make contact with windshield**New Volvo owner**

I have a 1995 850 GLT 5 speed with 56k miles, I love this car but i just realized that the driverside wiper doesnt make contact with the windshield throughout its entire range of motion. The wiper starts to lift off near the window near the end of its movement (when its more vertical near the left side of the windshield)... I hope my description makes sense.

also on a side note, ive driven 5 speed cars my whole life and it seems that this cars contact point activates without hardly pressing down the clutch pedal... is this normal ? it feel likes i depress the clutch pedal like 1 inch and its already at the contact point.

Please do a little searching, this is a common issue.

Cause: The pivot point the arm makes contact with two small tabs cast into the base. There are three ways around it.

Fixes are:

1. Bend the arm a bit closer to the window.
2. Put a flare on the contact point where the wiper is stopped on the tabs
3. Grind down(shave off) the aluminum tabs.

It bends over time. Also, being a new owner, please look at the information in the New Owner Maintenance Quesions.

dr Jelly- my 95 GLT wagon (with 200k) had a drivers side wiper that did the EXACT same thing! Bought a junkyard arm and it didnt change anything. I clamped the aluminium bit in a vice (with padding) and bent it slightly. Been good ever siince. would never have thought that was the way to "repair" it. Dave

When you google stuff for these cars, look over the links for url's that have Matt's site, this site, and Volvo speed. You can breeze over them.

jelly- It's the cast aluminum black part that the wiper arm attaches to kind of angle shaped

Haha yea I asked the same thing and I got all of these remarks saying to look at the new member section. All I did was take some pliers and bend the arm down and tada it probably helps that I have the Rain X latitude windshield wipers.

Yes, In fact I did...None of the links provide pictures of what exactly is the part that is causing the problem. I wanted to be 1000% sure before I did anything.

Grind it or go with 70 wipers.... problem solved..
Bending it only lasts for a little while depending where you live, here in miami the bend only lasts about 3 weeks to a month... went with some 70 arms from the junk yard and its been 2 years..

I see where a few people say go with the S70 arms and swap the sides, did you do that?

For the touching the hood issue? no i just loosened the nut a lifted the arm and tightened it back down... took about 3 tries but the clearance is about the with of a credit card... but it doesnt touch.

on a side note I had to go with a 20" blade on the drivers side to compensate for the adjustment, just so it wouldnt hit the rain diverters..

I took a flat head screwdriver and pried the edge of the arm near the hinge away from the two stops.
