Default New Battery - Ventilation Hose?

Hi,

S60 2.4T 2001

My battery recently can't hold its charge. When parked for longer than 8 hours, when I start the ignition I just hear a clicking sound. Although the radio and lights works. Sooo, I'm guessing it's time for a new battery. I went out to Walmart and almost bought one after checking out the index book by the batteries.

I got home today to have a look at the battery and instructions and I see I have to get a battery with a ventilation hose connection? Is this mandatory? I haven't seen any batteries like these? Is this a thing of the past? I'll be calling Volvo tomorrow, but I thought I'd get an opinion from you guys too

Thanks

Yes you need the vent hose because when the battery is being recharged by the alternator it gives off hydrogen gas which is explosive and you don't want that in your trunk. You will probably have to go to a Volvo dealer to get the special battery with the vent hose fitting on it.

Hi vegasjetskier,

Thanks for the quick response. I guess it pays to read the manual sometimes I'm surprised that the index books at Walmart and Costco don't mention this. Off to the dealership tomorrow....

Thanks

If you find an interstate battery you should be able to get a drain hose with it and tap it into to original drain and make it work.

Well the battery manufacturers just want to sell you a battery so they list the one they have that will fit in the space with the terminals in the correct spot, then conveniently forget that it needs to have the vent fitting. [:@]
