Default Oil additives for 2.5 5 cyl turbo

Hey folks,

I'm a relatively new owner of a 2015 S60 with the 2.5 5 cylinder turbo. I recently did an oil change using 5W30 Liqui Moly synthetic. I am aware that Volvo does not recommend any additives (probably because there is a lot of "overhaul in a bottle" junk out there lol), but what about reputable additives like Lucas and Marvel Mystery Oil? Are they good, bad, and/or worthless? The car has 74,000 miles.

Your quality name brand 5w30 synthetic is all you need. I've always wondered what Marvels mystery was? Maybe convincing you to part with your hard earned money!

I agree with hoonk. I have used liquimoly's ceratec on my old P2 S60 after an engine flush due to poor previous maintenance, but once I read in the new car's manual not to use any additives, that's all I needed to not add anything to my newer car.

Did the ceratec additive do anything? No clue. Does it feel like it did anything? Not at all.

I did notice my gas mileage improve, but I did a lot of things to my car that could have potentially increased that and it would be incorrect to assume it was any one thing I did.

I do vouch for the engine flush they have though. It really helped clean all the gunk out from lack of good maintenance practices.

+2 On a recent generation car running full synthetic - My two cents on oil additives are simply a "don't". Just change your oil on schedule with a quality full synthetic brand (I use Castrol Edge which you can buy at Walmart) in the correct weight and spec and your engine will last 300k+ miles. I'd also suggest buy OEM quality filters (I use Mann who I believe is Volvo's OEM supplier) as those double/micro blah blah blah filters can actually do more harm than good by restricting flow and lowering oil pressure.

What's in MMO? See this thread.
