Default Oil Leak From Filter ...Yet Again

Hi All, I am new to the forum here and I have done some searching but so far I have not found the answer.

I have a 2006 S60 2.5T with about 43,000 miles on it. The last 2 oil changes I have done, I have a difficult timegetting the oil filter to seal up after changing it. The first 2 changes I have done, no problems. Replaced the filter, removed and replaced the O-ring. Screwed the cap back on hand tight. No problem. But the last 2 changes have been a real PITA. I finally got it to seal after waisting 2 extra quarts of Mobile 1, and on this last oil change I cannot getthe filterto stop leaking. What is the trick to getting these things to seal up? They were all NAPA filters. This is my first Volvo and so far I love the car, but this thing is starting to drive me nuts.
Thanks for your assistence.

jeff

The o-rings might eb poor quality or it isn't tight enough. Are you using the special tool to tighten the housing?

Wow, that was quick. No, I have been only tightening it by hand. I have noticed when I really crank down on it it squeezes the seal out to the side and then leaks, so I tried not to tighten it so much and I got lucky before and got it to seal. This last time I have had no luck. I am using NAPA Oil filters. I had no problem with the first 2 oil changes I did using them, but these last 2 have been a challenge.

The seal should go into the oil pan. When you tighten it down the plastic should seat all the up on the oil pan.
Are you sure you are in the correct groove in the housing?
There is 2 grooves. One is deeper than the other. The deeper one I believe is the one you need to use.

It was the lowest groove below the threads. I will take a look at it this weekend to confirm. Thanks for the insight.

I believe the deepest on is the one right up against the ledge where the housing seats by the oil pan.

I had this happen on my s40 and found that I had slightly cross-threaded the housing. I got a new one and all is fine. The housing should thread easily hand tight then use the tool to just snug it. I just changed the oil on the S60 yesterday and had a little trouble getting the canister started because of the angle I'm at laying under the car.
