Default P0442 code, 2008 S60 2.5T

I just bought a 2008 S60 2.5T with 102k miles. The check engine light is on, and the code if P0442 evaporative emission control system leak detected (small leak).

From what I've read elsewhere, looks like it could be as simple as needing to tighten or replace the gas cap. I've also heard something about needing to add fuel additive of some kind. Then I also heard that it could be a very small leak in hoses, etc.

Any suggestions? I removed the gas cap and screwed in back down, then cleared the code. I guess I'll have to see if it comes back on.

How much of a concern is this? The car runs awesome.

Yes, it is most likely the gas cap but the other main "know" issue is the "J" tube. See the link below. It is A in the diagram and are known to crack.

Thanks for the response. Can you tell me where the evap system is located under the hood? I've looked at the link you provided, but aren't sure where it is.

It is actually located in the driver side rear wheel well. It's kind of a pain to get to and according to VADIS/VIDA you need to drop the muffler to get to it. I haven't had to do this yet so I can't give you a definite answer as to how hard it is to get to.

Upon further review, I noticed that the rubber gasket/seal around the base of the gas cap has cracked and most of it is missing. Any suggestions on where to get another gas cap, and if this will solve the problem?

Check Tascaparts.com. The are the cheapest for online OE Volvo parts. The part number you need is 30769237. Either that or go to the dealer. You may actually save money there due to the shipping cost.
