Popping noises when starting out

Popping noises when starting out
Hey everyone,
2002 S60 AWD
I live in the Inland Northwest and when starting out in the mornings (cold weather) my car tends to have a popping noise when turning the wheel sharply. An example would be backing out of a parking space or garage and then turning to move forward. Any clue what it is? I am guessing I have a bearing or ball joint issue but not entirely sure.
Thanks!

I'm having the same issue - 2003 Volvo S60T. In addition to the small "popping" noise when turning the wheel sharply to back out of a spot, I also have the a strange grinding sound that sounds almost like metal on metal. This noise only occurs when I make the first turn after the car sets for any time. Any ideas? I took it to the shop once and they said they couldn't reproduce it but I really don't think they tried.

The ABS does a self test soon after taking off. If it is not that it could be your CV joints. It is pretty normal for the CV joints on FWD cars to get a little noisy during sharp turns as they get miles on them. Look for a torn rubber boot. If none of your boots are bad, then you can probably put quite a few more miles on them before worrying about replacing them. If the boots are bad, then they will sling out all the grease and will need to be replaced.
If this only happens during a sharp turn of the wheels then you are probably hitting the stop. This can be hard on your power steering system and should be avoided.

RE: Popping noises when starting out
Well I got the report card back from the dealership. Let's just say that I am glad to be the proud owner of an extended warranty
At 45k miles the swaybar links are going to be replaced, the heater blower/motor is getting replaced, a steering part is getting replaced (the steering was realy stiff) and the transmission sensor has an issue (slight delay when taking off). In total they are ordering about $1500 in parts plus labor on top and my cost will be $100 out of pocket, thank goodness!
I will let the board know how things work out once I get everything replaced and back together again. It should be a couple of weeks before I provide an update on this one.

I know it's kind an old post, but could this be a solution to all of our problems coming from the steering system:

I know a lot of Volvo owners used them, and found them great.
