power steering rack identification
Hello all:
2004 s60 non-turbo
The story:
Tight steering on slow hard turns with some noise, a check of fluid level and add a bit seemed to help short term.
A Friday eve commute home in heavy rain maybe 12" at times resulted in a Monday morning notice of very stiff steering (coincidence ???)
Check under car shows some wetness at the rack on passengers side.
Last wknd power steering pump replacement resulted in no change.
Assume rack replacement needed and start looking for rebuilt rack online, wow what a lot of different versions of racks.
Seems like I need to know 1) w or w/o variable assist steering and 2) push-in or threaded fluid supply fittings to the racks steering column rotary valve.
Mine has threaded approx. 3/8 od inch tubing at the power steering pump supplying fluid to the column and looks the same at the column inlet as well as the return same size and threaded line back to the reservoir. (pic)
However, the high pressure lines approx. 1/4 inch od from the rotary valve out to the steering rack are push-in with a hold down plate bolted into the rotary valve housing. (pic)
The variable assist seems easy as no wiring harness, other than the O2 sensors, can be located anywhere looking from both sides, above and below.
Before I click buy on Item #: 840-1 from Rack Doctor detailed as "Unit fits All Volvo 60 WITHOUT Variable assist with threaded pump line inlets Rack and pinion " wanted a sanity check from this forum.
Much thanks for any advisement.
