Radio thoughts
We have recently bought a 2018 V60 CC. I should have learned from our last Volvo, a 2008 C70 (no bluetooth, no upgrade path), Volvo has the worst radios in the world. Oh well. I have a few infotainment issues/questions:
* Is there any way to make it work well with two cell phones? We seem to struggle with which one connects, and once one is connected, the other won't accept a call. In other cars, it's possible to have one "active" (ie, first up, streaming music, etc), and if the second gets a call, it takes over the connection.
* The web browser seems 100% broken. It won't even load google.com. True, I have no idea what I would DO with a browser that only works when parked, but it doesn't even work. Is there a fix?
* There are some apps. Just some. One that isn't there is "send to car" which seems to be a feature mentioned in youtube videos. Is there any way to add/update/modify the selection of apps? This might actually improve the system if we could add, for instance, waze.
* This radio doesn't support Apply Carplay or Android Auto. I asked Volvo about an update, and they said "yup, sucks to be you." I've seen aftermarket upgrades that sort of work with the Volvo system, but they are pricey (~$500), which is OK if they actually work well -- but I can't get a good feeling on user satisfaction. Any feedback on how to upgrade the infotainment system to something more functional?
* There is a menu option to get/setup your VolvoID. When I select that option, it churns for a while, then gives a red "frame" around a completely black screen. Any way to get this to function?
I know, it's just the radio. And my last car, a 2002 Villager van, had none of this stuff (but could actually be updated with a radio from Best Buy if I wanted to). But this car is just 5 years old and we are likely to drive it another 15 -- with technology that is already obsolete and un-upgradeable.
I'd love any suggestions on how to upgrade this!
Oh, and I seem to read on the web that the crash notification system that automatically calls the first responders failed in 2022 due to outdated cell technology with no upgrade path. Can anyone confirm this?
For all my grumbling, we do like the car. Just not the radio!
