Hey guys another question, the 2001 Volvo s60 i have doesn't have deck speakers on the back behind the back seats. I want to add speakers but dont really know what to buy and where i would wire the speakers. Trying to keep this out of a shop too not really wanting to spend 1,400$for someone to install them for me. Any help would be great and any advice would greatly be appreciated

 

I didn't know that Volvo equipped any of their modern cars with front only speakers. Are you sure?

I have an 02 s60 I wouldn't mind upgrading the stereo on. This car has a factory 'upgraded' amp/speaker system with the HU613 unit. Not something I'm doing immediately as other repairs are priority but I'd like to soon.
The last stereo/amp I installed was in 2003 on my 1989 Honda civic which was a sinch because no electronics to worry about..plug and play. For my 02 S60, every thread I read is nightmare sounding stories about harnesses, steering wheel controls, software installs, having to solder everything yourself, any diagrams from older posts have been removed, dash face kits online that fit an '05+ but not '01-04 and i dont know why theres a difference...etc...
I'm not an expert with electronics and circuitry but if this is something you pursue can you please keep this post updated??
As for speakers, well, I'm not sure either. But my back deck speakers look like this..

 

I was going to go with aftermarket speakers wouldn't that still be a plug and play?

 

Should be. Especially since the car should have speakers there, I would imagine any speakers the same ohms would work.

So assuming you have speakers in the rear doors and are considering adding speakers to the rear deck, then you need to first consider how you will set up the amps. you can check the existing speakers and amp specs, but generally they are 4 ohms. If you use the existing amp and drive two sets of 4 ohm speakers in parallel, the effective amp impedence will become 2 ohms If you put 8 ohm speakers in the deck and leave 4s in the doors you will get about 3 ohms for the amp (if the impedence is too low, the speakers will draw too much current from the amp - leading to overheating and possibly burning out the output transistors.) Some after market amps are designed for very low impedence loads so that's an alternative. Then again if you were to go that route you may as well run an extra amp. Another option is to not use the door speakers and rewire the existing amp to use new, better deck speakers. As to the size, you need to check both the cut out size by popping off the rear deck cover to look for framing obstructions and to measure for depth. Speaker vendors will show the cut out diameter and clearance required. You'd want to run the speaker wire under the floor carpet then up under the seat to reach the deck. The final and easiest option is to by newer high quality speakers for the doors. The current speakers are probably 5 1/4 from an OEM vendor like Infinity. Match for depth and do some research on speaker efficiency if you want volume vs clarity. Websites like Crutchfields have useful detail and you can also check the manufacturer's web pages for info.
