Default Replacing Door Lock Mechanism

I am a new Volvo owner, having bought a 2001 S60 for my soon to be 16 year old daughter. I have had the car for six months and am pleased with the ride and handling so far. I recently had an experience that I have never had before. I locked the car and was gone for a few hours, and when I returned I could not unlock the door(s). I thought perhaps the battery was dead causing the electric lock to fail, but I could not open the trunk or hood to try jumping the car. I ended up borrowing a slim jim and was able to unlock the front door, upon which I discovered the car started fine. The electric lock would not lock or unlock the doors, however. This brings up a couple of questions I need answered:

1) Is there a rod that should be connected to the lock mechanism to unlock the driver's door manually?

2) Should the ignition key unlock the trunk manually via the lock cylinder next to the trunk latch? (the lock will not turn, even after application of Liquid Wrench)

3) If the switch has failed in the driver's door is there any other way to unlock the trunk other than the cylinder next to the trunk latch?

I have above average skill with tools and car repairs, so I am confident I can replace the door switch/mechanism. I just want to make sure I am replacing the correct parts before I start.

Thanks,

Brian

use ur ignition key to open the drivers door then start d car. If it cranks and starts then car batt. is ok. Ur remote batt. may be dead so chck it out. Ign key should open the trunk try turning to left then right then keep on wiggling key. Does ur remote open the door/s, if not change batt. and use remote to open trunk

+1 on Manu's suggestions, in addition you should push the unlock button twice it should unlock the rest of the doors if it does then you have a problem with the drivers side door...check the remote out first and post your findings....it could be as simple as changing out the batteries in the remote. First thing you need to do is press the unlock button on the remote twice as stated above(process of elimination) again then post your findings! good luck

I guess my first post was not clear. I do not have a remote for the car. After I got the door opened, as I stated, the electric lock (the button on the door) would not lock or unlock the door.

I was hoping for someone with some technical knowledge about how to disassemble the door panel to replace the lock mechanism.

I have talked to one volvo tech who told me that the mechanical lever that should unlock the door with the key attaches with a plastic end that probably broke, which was why I couldn't unlock the door with the key.

that is correct, you were not clear on your first post.....secondly its an easy fix, all you need to do is to remove the plastics clips on the door panel(just like you would any other car)....then push the lock/unlock button and you will see the rod that is not connected to the actuator. the mechanic is probably correct is assuming that the plastic clip that holds the rod in place is broke..you can do 1 of 2 things either use safety wire making sure to secure it tightly to attach the rod or you can spend the money and buy another actuator and fix it properly.

Ah, so all cars use plastic clips to hold the door panels on? No screws under the door release handle? I think I will proceed using my own judgement rather than your vague advice.

I'm not sure how pushing the lock/unlock button would show anything if the switch is not functioning.

Default door lock/actuator mechanism

I have a 850 1995 volvo and also a S70 1998 volv0. I am trying to find out if the door lock/actuator mechanism for the 850 will fit in the 1998 S70, is so does any one have the P/N?

1) Is there a rod that should be connected to the lock mechanism to unlock the driver's door manually?

a) Yes, there is a link rod attached to a plastic retaining clip.

2) Should the ignition key unlock the trunk manually via the lock cylinder next to the trunk latch? (the lock will not turn, even after application of Liquid Wrench)

a) Yes there is a plastic cover that has to be removed, exposing the manual lock cylinder. If the cover is missing that may explain why it doesn't move.

3) If the switch has failed in the driver's door is there any other way to unlock the trunk other than the cylinder next to the trunk latch?

a) Yes, place the key in the driver's door lock and turn anticlockwise twice within 10 seconds. This will unlock all doors as well as the trunk.
