Default S60 T5 shopping...

My brother is looking to pick up an S60 T5... I might go take a look at the car in question... I've never driven one, but I would like to. I have been reading on here... and notice an issue with headlights burning out quickly, as well as a transmission problem (though I think and hope that this only applies to the automatics). His car will definately be a manual.
So what should I look for in terms of problems/issues?

And what is geartronic? Is that a tiptronic/sportronic basically an auto with a seperate shift gate for "up" and "down" shifts?

I'm an audi guy, but used volvo's seem like bargains!

If he gets a manual then he will be fine.
Yes the headlights do burn out quite fast. But if he finds one with the Xeons he will be fine as well.

Other than that the cars are good overall.

So when I go look for it, there is no problems I should be looking for, no specific common issues? That's pretty easy... haha

And yeah, I am not sure if the one he is looking at has xenons or not... Hmm. Would definately be nice if it did... nicer still if it saves him replacing bulbs all the time.

Normal wear and tear stuff he can look for like upper torque mount broke. Serp belt and timing belt. ETC

Ah, that is a good point. The car is at 60K miles... a popular time for people to ditch cars, as scheduled maintenance can be pretty expensive at the 60K mile mark... when should the timing belt be done on these cars? How much labour is involved? I am assuming these are interference engines... and a timing belt failure is messy...

So yeah, 60K miles... what needs to be done in terms of regular maintenance? Wish I had a manual I could look at

haha yeah, I won't be without an audi for many years... that is for sure. But my brother is after something reliable... and... well... Audi's are ... umm, not... he pays somebody to fix everything that breaks... so the audi would likely bankrupt him. I have always loved volvo since they switched to the new body style... so very nice. The T5 S60 seems sweet too, wish the AWD version could come with a decent motor, or a manual tranny. Awesome prices though -- I thought Audi's resale was bad!

If you're looking at an 01 make sure it has the etm upgrade! That was the biggest problem with the early s60's. I would also pay careful attention to the suspension. In fact, I'd INSIST upon driving the car off for the day and taking it for a spin with the radio off and putting it up on a rack. Look for bad endlinks and control arms.
