S60 Transmission Issue

S60 Transmission Issue
Hi,
I just bought an 04 S60. I love the car but a couple of weeks ago I started experiencing something wierd. Occasionally (maybe 3-4 times a day) when I start off from and the transmission is going from 2nd to 3rd (I think) the RPMs shoot up to about 3500 and THEN the transmission shifts. It doesn't slam hard but I know its not right.
Any ideas on what is going on? My understanding is that these transmissions are sealed and something like this would require tranmission replacement.
Help me out guys. The car has 49K on it and I'm thinking I need to get in in to the dealer before the warranty is out.
Thanks in advance!!

RE: S60 Transmission Issue
I don't know, maybe its just me, but i hear a lot of people talking about the volvo tranny. I know they are good units but I think that have these little nuances to them that decide to do weird things. Maybe thanks to the drive by wire, or the fact that there is sooo much computing going on under the hood that they try to think what you want which isn't always the case. I have the same problem occasionally but it happens once a month, and its always after driving briskly then deciding to take it easy, then getting back on it. I say take it in if you have the time and get it checked out, what could it hurt?

RE: S60 Transmission Issue
This sounds like the famous "shift flare" that has been discussed on this forum and others. Depending upon which software version your TCM (transmission control module) you may need a software upgrade or to get your TCM adaption set to 0 and then re-learned. I know that there is a fuse that can be removed to reset the TCM, and then there is a specific way the car has to be driven for a certain period of time, then the park to reverse and neutral to drive engagement has to be learned. If you don't want the hassle of trying to do this yourself, you may call Volvo and talk to them about it..
