Default shift up or slow down

I have a 2004 Volvo S60. Last night we started the car a it was puttering, the check engine light wis flashing and it's saying shift up or slow down. The RPM's are fine, if we stay at 50 mph the car runs fine. It's when we excclerate or we are sitting at a light. If we put the car in neutral while we are sitting it doesn't putter, the minute we put it in drive, it starts puttering again. Has anybody had this proplem? What can we do to fix it. Please help thuis is our first Volvo and my husband is very handy with fixing cars.

I just got that problem Slow down or Shift up. I happend right after I had my Timing belt changed. Could that have been part of the reason im having this problem?

I will guess that they didn't time the engine properly after doing the timing belt.

Another problem could be that the throttle body needs cleaned.

No change your plugs and maybe ignition coil. My 2012 s60 did the same thing and nothing but sputtering. Changed those and its fine. Said shift uo or slow down.
