Default A sign of things to come?

Well since I installed the Xemodex repaired ETM in my car the first of November last year, my car has been problem free. Until today kind of. After doing some errands in town, I return home to park in my car port, put it in park and the engine idles up to 1100 RPM. I think that's weird, put it in reverse and it goes down to normal, put it in drive and it does that 3-4 second stall and SLAMS into gear. It is the hardest I've ever felt it go into gear, felt like it was going to jump out from the car. I figure "oh great" and take it for a drive round the block. Everything is pretty normal but now the gear shifts take about 1 second flat to change. The revs don't shoot up between changes, it just takes much longer. I also noticed that when coming to a stop, it's holding the RPM higher when downshifting. I so hope this isn't a problem with the ETM since they are in Canada but I don't think it is. Is my transmission on a downhill slide now? I did a drain and refill of the fluid about a month and a half ago. About 600 miles ago.

My car has been doing that 3 second delay from P to D, then a jerk into gear since I bought it. Did a drain/fill and that did'nt fit it either. However, I haven't experienced anything between gear changes while in drive.

Well, today was the warmest day it's been in over a month (50 vs. 20) and I've always felt that transmission dislikes warmth. It only does the P to D delay when it's warm (operating temp combined with outside temp). It seems to be an isolated event as I have driven the car all evening and didn't have anything weird happen. I need to have the TCM software updated, I better schedule that tomorrow. We'll see.

Maybe I'm being paranoid, but the idle to 1100 rpm was strange.

your transmission is getting up there in miles/years. Many 01s failed at 80k.

Yes, that's been on my mind also. Knowing that a lot have failed between 60-80k. I am taking a vacation to Louisville, Kentucky in March and really wanted to drive my own car. I wonder if I should now?

Going to watch some ball?

Hard to say - monitor it until first week of Feb then report back.

No, but that is a good idea!! I'm going for the Mid-America Trucking Show, largest trucking trade show in the world.

And will do. I'll see how it does.

Hmmm, mine is the complete opposite. When the weather is warm and the car is warmed up, it shifts very smoothly. When it's cold out and it takes awhile for the car to warm up, it will do the jerk/delay from P to D, then the shifts from 1,2,3rd gear, etc will be kind of delayed (it will rev up a bit higher before going into the next gear). Once warmed up, everything is fine.

I wonder if our issues are somewhat related or completely different.

By the way, I too have an '01 T5 with similar mileage (127k)

Google "B4 servo cover replacement".

My 2002 V70 (same AW55-50 transmission) had that issue. I replaced the B4 servo cover and it cured it 90%. It completely cured the 2-3-4 shifting surges and fixed the delay into drive significantly. I still have a slight clunk into drive about 10% of the time.

The part was around $15 from FCP Groton, and was a simple fix. You remove the front drivers side wheel and splash guard for easy access. You will need an internal snap-ring pliers to remove and install the cover. Installation took about 20 minutes.

Cool - will definitely put that on the to-do list. Thanks!

That's a good idea. I planned on doing it until I read the TSB this evening. Apparently mine isn't affected.

The first three digits of the serial number on affected transmissions will be between 01C (March 2001) and 01L (December 2001).
My transmission starts out 01B.

How do you find your trans. serial #?

Look under the hood and on top of the transmission will be a small black plate. Will be on there.

Ah - mine is 01E, so looks like it should work for me.

Another odd event today. Sorry, not trying to write a novel on my car, just wanting to document some things and get opinions. I also posted this on matthewsvolvosite in the ETM section.

Today I start the car, back out of my drive way, and at the stop sign at the exit of my neighborhood the car comes to a stall. It refires but is running very rough (like a failed ETM). It was hunting idle, VERY rough, and when I tried to drive, the RPM wouldn't go above about 2 thousand and felt as if it was going to stall any second. Even with foot to the floor. I limp it back to the house and it's running like crap. After a couple of restarts of the engine it finally runs ok. After startup it idled up to about 2000 and slowly fell down to normal. Do you feel it's the ETM or some other problem?

I'm leaning towards either the ETM or maybe MAFS? Drove it to work and it did fine. On the way home stopped at Autozone and there are no codes. Made the trip home fine too.

So far, doesn't look like Louisville, KY is going to see Jesse's Volvo anytime soon, lol!

I've never experienced it, and hope never to experience it, but to me, the above description sounds a bit like you were in "limp mode".
