Does anyone know what is the space besides (left side) the audio panel is for?

Is there anything that can be installed in this space? I have a 6-CD changer but it accepts only RAW audio. I want to upgrade to a MP3 player. Can I use this space for such things?

I have marked the space (in red) in the attached image.

It's used to hold your phone.

 

Volvo only sells two things for that space- a small storage cubby or a pop-out cupholder.
