Default Starting problems, almost empty fuel tank

I'm facing problems starting on a almost empty fuel tank with my 2001 S60 2.4.

This happend more than once. The first time it was towed to the Volvo dealer and they replaced the battery. Then I kept track of what happened while the dealer noticed "Look for fuel station in time because your almost empty'. And indeed when the light of low fuel is off the thing starts directly at once! When the fuel light lits then the next day it is hard to start, when driven aprox 30km with low fuel light on the next day it would not start at all.
Does someone experinced the same, what is the problems.

Thanks for your responce, Rene

They are located under the rear seat. The dealer can look in the computer and see which one is reaading incorrect. They can get readings from both sides.

just wondering if you are on a bit of a slope when trying to start your car
if this is the case and the car is facing down you will have trouble starting as the feed pipe is at the rear of the petrol tank
try your car facing upwards if you are low on fuel in the tank

hope this helps
