Default stereo question

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to this site having just gotten a 2002 S60 AWD. What can i say, I love the car; everything works, drives really well. I also realized the stereo is not bad, however, when I try to just sit in the car to listen to the stereo with the key in position 1, the instrument panel lights come on and the AC fan has power (but can be manually turned off); and for fear of draining the battery, I just turn the stereo off by switching off the key. Is it really designed this way or there's a work around to turning off the lights? Thanks.

Hi guys! Any suggestions on what I can try, or test, or do? Or is it really like that? Will appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks for replying, 03S60. The headlights are off when I'm in position 1. Actually, i don't even touch the light switch since the DRL and panels lights are on all the time. The only functionality I don't have at that point is switching to high beam.

I have the same model and spec as you and with key in position 1, after the radio is on for approx. 30 seconds the overhead courtesy lamp automatically shuts off. However, the instrument panel lamps and ventilation remain on. One more thing: When the key is at position 1, engine off, the blower motor will run on high whenever the A/C is engaged.

Thanks J.A. for your response. I was informed (from another forum) that the IP lights can be programmed to be switched off while key is in position 1 at the dealer for roughly $80.
