Hello everyone,
Newbie here.
I called this morning to make an appointment for an oil change to my 01 S60 T5, no problem. The Volvo dealership mentioned that I should probably replace my timing belt since I am approaching 105k. Again, no problem as I understand this to be a correct timeframe for preventative maintanance.
The problem, they told me it would be something like $650 to replace the timing belt. They could give me 'a coupon' that would lower it to $540 or so. Does this seem excessive? Any advice? Is this something that I could replace for less at an independant volvo shop? What would be considered reasonable for this replacement. I know very little about this stuff but this is a $45.00 part!
Thank you in advance for your help.

That is a lot of dough, to be sure. But it also may be that they have included tensioning roller, idler roller, etc as part of the quote which may have driven the price up. They are a very good idea to change along with the water pump (being timing belt driven and all) so you don't have a repeat episode later on. Especially in the case of the water pump :-)
You might check to see what was included in the price (with coupon applied) - it seems to be in the range, from what I've heard..

Ok. I THINK I have a reasonable qoute from an Independant Volvo shop
Timing Belt
Tensioner
Water pump (because I have been told to do this while they are doign the timing belt)
fuel filter
oil & filter change
antifreeze replacement
For $800.00
Does this seem reasonable?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Are they doing the spark plugs and Air filter?
The timing belt job minus the Water pump should be almost $400.00
Water pump job no labor only parts maybe $200.00
Oil change like $40.00
Fuel filter like $60.00
A total of about $100.00 less than you were quoted.
But that is a Quesstimate. I really only work on the cars.
But sometimes overhear the prices.
If they also replace both the Idler and Tensioner then maybe $800.00 is a good price.

replace the water pump, the belt on there now has stretched a bit and when you put a new belt, tensioners and idlers on there it will stress the bearings in the water pump, chances are it will go out soon afterward. its days will be numbered,
850 at dealer is expensive however consider the alternative
aftermarket parts did not last or untrained tech did the work, or just did not do it could equal very expensive engine repair.
