timing belt
Giving daughter my 2004 S60 72K miles on it. She commutes 60 miles a day. Have read how awful if timing belt breaks. Should I replace it? Also, am buying a 2006 S60 for me 90 K miles ( No commuting but local driving for this 84 year old S60 lover) Should I replace MY timing belt? Just don't want daughter's car ruined by timing belt breakdown. Car has always been serviced well, bought it six years ago with 20K miles, no problems ever. Thanks loads!

everyone has their own opinion on when to replace the belt volvo does recommend 105,000 however that is just a recommendation, I would check the belt for any cracks since you have 72,000 on the engine....personnally I would recommend you change it simply because if the belt goes it will destroy the engine. I have an 03 s60 has 168,000 and the belt has been replace 2 times....1st time was because when I bought the car I did not know if it had been changed and didn't want to take a chance since it showed signs of cracking....2nd time the idler pulley siezed and I replace everything again to be on the safe side. I would rather spend the few hundred than thousands to replace the engine....better safe than sorry!

Im new to Volvos, and love my '02 S60 2.4T AWD. But with my prior experience with American cars the Timing belt is actually inside a cover in the engine and takes quite a bit of work to replace. I was looking at timing belts and parts for my 'S60, and i noticed that there are idler pullies, and the belt looks like a serpentine belt. Changing the timing belt on the 2.4T cant be as easy as changing a serpentine belt, on the outside of the engine can it?
Thx.

Ok here is a How to video on the replacement of the timing belt.. Its done on a Non Turbo but its the same for all S60.. This looks very easy but Just remember that if this is not done 100% correct you run the risk of damaging your car beyond repair..
Dealer will run you about $700 to do Good indy is in the $400 range...

interference, should the timing belt go the engine will be destroyed...this is why it is very important to change them when recommended. If you bought a car with high mileage and not sure if the belt has been changed, your better off changing it spending a couple hundred instead of having to spend a couple of thousand to replace the engine.
